The Best of Israel : COOKING CLUB WITH JOCELYNE LEBER
Do you want to buy traditional Jewish dishes that you won't make at home? See what the cooking club has to offer.
Throughout the ages, scattered in different lands, the unique Jewish way of preparation of foods and Jewish eating, habits, have been one of the great forces leading to the Jewish survival. I dream about a time today where the community can gather together in the shul kitchen sharing their best recipes and having a good time.
The cooking club is now making food which they will sell to the community. So far members have made challahs, tsimmes, apple crisp and much more
Challah for sale on September 5th from 9 am to 12 pm
6$ each with and without raisins
10$ each gluten free
Honey Sponge Cake

6 eggs, separated
1 cup sugar
3 Tbsps. honey
3 Tbsps. strong black coffee
2 Tbsps. oil
1 tsp cinnamon
3 cloves, crushed (optional)
1 Tbsp brandy
1 1/4 cups flour
1 1/2 tsps. baking powder
Preheat oven to 350.
In a small mixer bowl beat egg whites with 1/2 cup sugar untill stiff but not dry and set aside.
In a separate bowl, cream egg yolks and 1/2 cup sugar. Add honey, coffee, oil, cinnamon, cloves and brandy. Beat until thick and light in color.
With a spatula, fold in flour and baking powder until well blended. Then fold in egg whites gently and carefully until well blended. Pour into ungreased tube pan. Bake for 1 hour. When done immediately invert on soda bottle. Cool at least 3 hours before removing so that cake will not fall. When cool, loosen edges and remove cake from pan.
USE: 10-inch tube pan
YIELDS: 1 cake
Challah
12 cups flour
½ cup sugar
3 eggs plus 1 yolk
½ cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon sesame seeds
1 tablespoon anise seeds
2 packages fresh yeast
3 cups warm water
Place the flour in a huge bowl. Make a well in the center and add to the well sugar, 3 eggs, vegetable oil, salt and sesame and anise seeds. Proof the yeast in 1 cup of the warm water. Then add it to the well.
Gradually work in the flour with the ingredients in the well. Add more water as needed (about 2 cups). When a medium stiff dough is formed, knead on a wooden board for about 20 minutes.
Form the dough into a ball, turn it in a greased bowl to coat the surface, and cover with a towel. Let rise then punch down and knead once more. Divide the dough into 5 pieces. Either shape each into a round ball, or make a long piece of it and twist it into a spiral with the end of the dough at the high point in the center. Cover for about 1 hour and let rise until doubled.
Preheat oven to 400. Cover a cookie sheet with aluminum foil.
Move the dough to the cookie sheet; brush with the remaining egg yolk and a tablespoon of oil and bake for 35 to 45 minutes
